Identity is not fixed

One of the greatest illusions people carry through life is the idea that identity is permanent.

We get labeled early. Family tells us who we are. Schools tell us who we are. Religion, culture, jobs, and relationships all hand us roles to play. After enough years, many people start believing those roles are permanent.

But identity is not fixed.

Sometimes we find ourselves stuck somewhere in life and we assume the situation defines us. We think we are trapped in that version of ourselves. In reality, we are free at any moment to decide we are no longer that person.

Just because someone looks at you and believes something about you does not mean you need to accept it.

Like I often say, their opinion of you is none of your business.

When you know who you are because you consciously chose who you are, something shifts. You stop wasting energy worrying about whether people approve of you. You stop performing for expectations that were never yours to begin with.

You simply live.

And here is the strange part most people never realize: attention, even negative attention, is not the disaster people think it is. When people love you or hate you, it means you are visible. It means you are influencing the world around you. Influence has always been more powerful than approval.

Freedom comes in many forms, but the ability to choose your identity may be one of the most powerful forms of freedom we have.

At Zarlequan we practice a simple formula.

First we become aware of the identities we inherited.
Then we examine them honestly.
Then we consciously choose the identity we want to embody moving forward.

Ritual, symbolism, and beauty are tools that help reinforce that choice.

Through daily practices and the monthly Glassen Fires moon ritual, we remind ourselves that identity is not something we discover once and keep forever. It is something we practice, shape, and renew.

You are not locked into who you were yesterday.

You can choose again.

And again.

And again.
